Your electrical panel is the heart of your home’s power system. As homes add EV chargers, heat pumps, induction cooktops and smart devices, many older panels simply cannot keep up. Here are six signs it is time for an upgrade.
1. You still have a 60–100 amp panel or a fuse box
Modern homes are built around 200-amp service. A 60–100 amp panel — or an old fuse box — is undersized for today’s demands.
2. Breakers trip frequently
Regular tripping means the panel is overloaded and struggling to deliver the power your home needs.
3. Lights flicker when appliances kick on
If lights dim when the AC or microwave starts, your system may be maxed out.
4. You are adding a major new load
EV chargers, whole-house AC, a hot tub or a kitchen remodel often require more capacity than an older panel can provide.
5. Warm panel, buzzing, or a burning smell
A panel that is warm, buzzing or giving off a burnt smell is a serious fire hazard — call a licensed electrician right away.
6. Your home is decades old and never upgraded
Some older panel brands are now considered unsafe and are flagged by inspectors and insurers. Upgrading to 200-amp service makes your home safer, insurable and EV-ready.
